Established in 2005,
Tobacco Farmers in Crisis (TFIC) is a non-profit federally
registered
membership-based
farm organization
representing the majority of the
remaining
700 tobacco farm families in Canada who are currently facing economic
devastation
as a result of conflicting government policies on
tobacco and tobacco
control.
These policies have increased both the amount of contraband cigarettes
sold
and
the use of cheap, imported tobacco used in Canada and have plunged
farmers
into debt and greatly contributed
to the immediate threat facing their
family
farms and surrounding communities.
TFIC
membership includes the majority of tobacco farmers in Ontario and Quebec.
In
Ontario, TFIC’s voluntary members
are also mandatory members of the Ontario
Flue-Cured
Tobacco Growers’ Marketing
Board (OFCTGMB). Unlike the OFCTGMB,
however,
whose mandate covers the marketing and production of
tobacco, TFIC’s
mandate
focuses solely on the development and delivery of a fair and orderly exit
strategy
for tobacco growers in Canada as crop sizes decrease.
To
make a difference in the lives of Canadian tobacco farm families, by
securing
for
them
their right and the
freedom
to determine their own self-worth and future.
• Secure
a comprehensive, fair and orderly exit strategy for Canadian
tobacco
farmers.
• Represent
the concerns of - and expand the understanding of the crisis faced by
-
tobacco
farm families to government, the media and the general public through
educational
and advocacy
efforts.
• Develop
a collaborative network of broader-based stakeholders, in support of
tobacco-growing
communities.
• Meet
our membership’s expectations by increasing public acceptance, gaining
respect
and resolving
our crisis.
• Cultivate
an environment of compassion and hope for our members.
• Secure
fair and equitable compensation for tobacco farm families wishing to exit
the
industry.
• Define,
develop and defend a comprehensive package.
• Contribute
to the development of a tobacco control policy that protects the
health
of Canadians by
helping farmers.
